What Is a Lighting Control System?
What it actually replaces
In a conventional installation, the wiring decides the lighting. A circuit is a group, a switch is a circuit, and changing which lights work together means changing cable. Anything clever — dimming a cove without dimming the downlights, warming the colour in the evening — has to be designed into the wiring before the plaster goes on.
A control system moves that decision from the wiring to the software. Fittings are wired once, addressed individually, and grouped afterwards. If the client decides the reception should behave differently six months after handover, that is a change in the configuration, not a change in the ceiling.
The four things a system has to get right
Specifications tend to focus on the hardware list. In practice a system succeeds or fails on four things, and only one of them is a product you can buy off a shelf.
- Addressing— every fitting reachable on its own, so grouping is a software decision rather than a wiring one.
- Scenes— states worth returning to. Not just brightness levels, but the levels someone actually wants at breakfast, during service, or at closing.
- Integration— lighting rarely acts alone. Curtains, HVAC, audio, door locks and relays usually belong in the same gesture.
- The interface— the part everyone touches, and the part most often left until last.
How the lights get spoken to: DALI
DALI — Digital Addressable Lighting Interface — is the open standard most lighting control is built on. Its significance is in the middle word: every driver on the bus gets its own address, so the system talks to fittings individually rather than to circuits.
Two consequences follow. Grouping becomes configuration, as above. And communication runs both ways: a DALI driver reports back, so the system knows a fitting has failed rather than waiting for someone to notice a dark patch in a ceiling.
It is also worth knowing what DALI replaced. Analogue dimming (0–10V) needs a separate control pair per dimming channel, so a channel is a group by construction, and it carries no feedback. Phase dimming works on the mains waveform and is cheap, but its compatibility with LED drivers is a lottery and it is a common source of flicker. DALI sends a digital instruction to a named device, which is why it holds a level consistently and scales past a handful of circuits.
Where DALI stops and the building begins
DALI is a lighting protocol. It has nothing to say about a curtain motor, a thermostat or a door lock. That boundary is where a gateway comes in: it translates between DALI and the wider building system, most often KNX, so one instruction can cross from lighting into everything else.
This is the practical reason most real projects are not “DALI or KNX” but both — DALI down at the fittings, KNX across the building, a gateway between them. We compare the two properly in DALI vs KNX.
The interface is the product
A system nobody can operate is a system nobody uses. The hardware in two projects can be near-identical while the experience is completely different, because what people meet is the screen.
This is where a system built by people who write their own software differs from one assembled out of catalogue parts. Our interfaces — wall-mounted displays, the Launcher, and iOS, Android and web apps — are developed in house, so the layout can follow the building rather than the other way round. A hotel with its own guest-room conventions, a restaurant that runs a particular sequence at opening and closing, a villa where the client wants the whole house on one screen: each is a configuration question, not a compromise.
Practically, judge an interface on three things. Can someone who has never seen it change a level without training? Can the operator adjust a scene without calling the integrator back? And does each user level see only what it should — a guest, housekeeping and the facilities manager needing very different screens?
What a system is made of
- Addressable driversin the fittings, which is what makes each one reachable. Specify DALI drivers early — retrofitting them is expensive.
- Gateways bridging DALI to KNX and to the rest of the building.
- Touch panels and switches at the wall, for the people who will never open an app.
- A local server holding the logic, so the building keeps working when the internet does not.
- Software on phones, tablets and the web for everything the wall cannot show.
What tends to go wrong
Four failure modes account for most disappointing installations, and none of them is a hardware fault.
- Zoning decided on the drawing. Ceilings move during construction. Scenes set against the plan rather than the finished room feel wrong in ways nobody can name.
- Too many scenes. Thirty presets is a menu nobody reads. Four that match how the space is actually used will be used.
- A cloud dependency nobody asked for. If the lights need the internet, an outage becomes a lighting failure. Core control belongs on the local network.
- Commissioning treated as a formality. The difference between a system that works and one that merely powers on is time spent in the room with the operator, walking through it.

- What is a lighting control system?
- It is a system that replaces fixed on/off circuits with individually addressable fittings and software. Each light or group can be dimmed and tuned on its own, combinations can be saved as scenes and recalled from a panel, an app, a schedule or a sensor, and the grouping can be changed later without rewiring. - What does DALI actually give me that dimmers do not?
- Individual addressing and two-way communication. Every driver on a DALI bus has its own address, so which fittings act together is a software decision rather than something fixed in the cabling — and drivers report their status back, so a failed fitting is known rather than discovered. Analogue 0-10V dimming needs a control pair per channel and gives no feedback; phase dimming is cheap but its LED compatibility is inconsistent and it is a common cause of flicker.
- Do I have to choose between DALI and KNX?
- Usually not. Most projects use DALI at the fittings and KNX across the wider building, joined by a gateway. DALI is a lighting protocol and says nothing about curtains, HVAC or access control; KNX covers those but is not designed for addressing hundreds of individual luminaires. Using both, with a gateway between them, is the normal arrangement rather than a compromise.
- Will the lighting still work if the internet goes down?
- It should, and in our systems it does. The control logic lives on a local server on site, so panels, switches, scenes and schedules keep working without any internet connection. Cloud connectivity adds remote access and updates on top of that — it is not what the building depends on to switch a light on.
- Can the interface be designed for our project specifically?
- Yes. We develop our own wall displays, Launcher, and iOS, Android and web apps, so the layout, language, icons and which controls appear on which screen are configured per project. That extends to permissions — a guest, a housekeeper and a facilities manager can each be given a different view of the same system.
- Do you supply the light fittings as well?
- No. Intelligent Future is a lighting control company, not a luminaire manufacturer. We work with whichever fittings your project specifies and integrate them over DALI. In practice this is an advantage: we have no commercial reason to push a particular fitting, so the specification stays yours.
- How much does a lighting control system cost?
