DALI vs KNX: Where Each One Belongs
What each was built to do
DALI(Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a lighting protocol. Its purpose is to give every driver an address so fittings can be dimmed, tuned and grouped individually, and to hear back from them — a DALI driver reports its status, so a failure is known rather than noticed. It is deliberately narrow. DALI has no opinion about a curtain motor or a thermostat because it was never meant to.
KNX is a building automation standard. It carries lighting, blinds, heating, ventilation, access and metering across a whole installation from many different manufacturers. Its strength is breadth and vendor independence. Its weakness, for lighting specifically, is granularity: KNX addresses devices on a bus, and putting several hundred individual luminaires directly on it is not what it is good at.
The boundary, in one sentence
DALI goes down to the fitting; KNX goes across the building.
That is the whole of it, and almost every practical decision follows from it. If the question is “how do I dim this cove independently of those downlights?”, that is a DALI question. If it is “how does the meeting-room panel also close the blinds and set the temperature?”, that is a KNX question. Projects have both kinds of question, which is why they usually end up with both protocols.
What a gateway does at that boundary
A gateway is the device that sits between the two and translates. On one side it speaks DALI to the lighting bus; on the other it speaks KNX (or another building protocol) to everything else. A single instruction — a scene button, a schedule, an occupancy sensor — can then cross from lighting into curtains, HVAC and audio without anyone having to press four things.
It matters more than it sounds. Without a gateway, a DALI installation is an island: excellent lighting control that cannot participate in anything else the building does. The gateway is what turns lighting into part of the building system rather than a parallel one, and it is also where status flows back the other way, so lighting can be monitored alongside everything else.
When DALI alone is enough
- The scope really is lighting. A retail fit-out, a gallery, a restaurant refurbishment where blinds and HVAC are not in the package.
- Fine control matters more than breadth — many fittings that need individual dimming or tuneable white.
- The budget is finite and the building has no other automation to integrate with. Adding KNX for its own sake buys nothing.
When KNX earns its place
- Lighting is one subsystem among several, and they need to act together — hotels, offices, larger residences.
- Equipment is coming from several manufacturers and has to interoperate without being locked to one vendor.
- The installation is expected to grow. KNX absorbs additions over years without the original design being redone.
What people actually get wrong
In our experience the damaging mistakes are not choosing the “wrong” protocol. They are these:
- Specifying non-DALI drivers and deciding on addressable control afterwards. Changing drivers once the fittings are installed is the expensive kind of change.
- Treating the gateway as an afterthought. It defines what the two halves of the system can say to each other; it belongs in the design, not the snag list.
- Buying breadth nobody will use. A full KNX installation on a project with no blinds, no HVAC integration and no growth plan is money spent on optionality that never gets exercised.
- Assuming the protocol determines the experience. It does not. Two projects on identical hardware feel entirely different depending on the interface and how the scenes were set.

- Is DALI better than KNX?
- Neither is better; they solve different problems. DALI addresses individual light fittings and is the stronger choice for lighting detail. KNX carries an entire building — lighting, blinds, HVAC, access — across many manufacturers. Asking which is better is like asking whether a scalpel beats a toolbox. Most projects use DALI at the fittings and KNX across the building, joined by a gateway.
- What does a DALI gateway actually do?
- It translates between the DALI lighting bus and the wider building system, usually KNX. On one side it speaks DALI to the drivers; on the other it speaks KNX to curtains, HVAC, audio and access control. Without one, a DALI installation is an island — good lighting control that cannot take part in anything else the building does. It also carries status back, so lighting can be monitored alongside other systems.
- Can DALI and KNX work together?
- Yes, and that combination is the normal arrangement rather than a workaround. A gateway bridges the two so a single scene, schedule or sensor trigger can reach both the lighting and the rest of the building. Intelligent Future builds systems this way as a matter of course.
- Which is cheaper?
- For a lighting-only scope, DALI is generally the lower total cost — fewer devices doing exactly what is needed. KNX costs more up front because it brings infrastructure for subsystems beyond lighting, so it only pays back if those subsystems are actually in the project or planned. The larger cost driver in either case is the number of addressable points and the integration scope, not the protocol name.
- Is DALI wired or wireless?
- Wired. A DALI bus is a two-core control pair run alongside the power, and it is not polarity sensitive, which makes installation forgiving. Being wired is a feature rather than a limitation here: it removes the interference and battery questions that wireless lighting control has to answer, and it is why DALI holds a level reliably in installations with hundreds of fittings.
- How many fittings can one DALI line control?
- A single DALI line addresses up to 64 devices, organised into up to 16 groups and 16 scenes. Larger installations use multiple lines brought together by the controller or gateway, so the 64 figure is a unit of design rather than a ceiling on the project.
- What about wireless systems like Zigbee?
- Wireless protocols suit retrofits where pulling a control cable is impractical, and they can work well at small scale. For a specified installation we prefer a wired DALI backbone: no battery maintenance, no interference from the building's other radios, and consistent behaviour across hundreds of fittings. Wireless is a sensible exception, not the default.
